Learning Experiences

Madison Public Library is offering five different technology related learning experiences as a result of receiving an almost $250,000 grant. These experiences are open to Madison students grades 4-12 between March 2023 and September 2024. A total of 35 experiences will be offered, seven of each topic. Experiences last approximately 20 hours. Most will occur over a five-day consecutive period for four hours per day when school is not in session. A few will be offered afterschool during the 2023-2024 school years and will happen over a period of two weeks. Students are encouraged to attend more than one learning experience during the grant period, but they are discouraged from attending the same experience more than once.

Led by folks with STEM and fine arts backgrounds, students participate in a hands-on learning experience where they experiment with the science, technology, engineering, and math aspects of art and music. This combined with conducting science investigations provides a fun and engaging way to explore art, music, and science.

This hands-on robotics experience moves beyond Lego robotics. Beginning with a robot that follows a marker trail, students advance to more complicated robots. These can include building a small robot to accomplish various tasks or interacting with a robot that plants, weeds, and waters a garden. Students will leave with knowledge they can apply to participating in school Battlebot teams or building a robot of their own at home.

This hands-on learning experience has students utilizing the equipment from the library’s CreateSpace like CO and fiber lasers, heat presses, 3D printers, vacuum formers, CNC routers, and vinyl printers to make products they can sell. But this is more than just making a product. Students follow the entrepreneurial journey from creating a product, making a business plan, marketing the product, and ultimately pitching the product to “investors” before trying to sell to consumers.
